Garden Wall Stabilization Project Begins

Garden Wall Stabilization Project Begins

This morning, work began on our latest project: stabilizing the remaining portion of the historic east garden wall. The majority of this wall unfortunately collapsed after a period of heavy rains in 2020, leaving sixty-nine tons of brick and stone on the ground. Funds were raised at the time to address a potential restoration of the wall, but in the end the costs were found to be too high. Instead, the remaining portion of the wall will be stabilized and repaired.

Here, a crew is beginning the work of creating concrete footings for newly-fabricated steel angle brackets that will ensure that the remaining part of the wall will be preserved.

Other improvements to the garden will proceed from this important work. It’s all part of our plan to get our beautiful garden ready for America 250. Just as we were Alexandria’s official garden for the national Bicentennial celebration in 1976, we are readying ourselves to host Alexandria’s official garden for the United States Semiquincentennial in 2026!
